Updated Travel Advice for UK Citizens Planning to Visit Turkey

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office has updated its travel advice for citizens planning to travel to Turkey, highlighting various security alerts.

In the announcement made by the ministry; special attention was drawn to issues such as taxi use, mass demonstrations, the risk of counterfeit alcohol, and the obligation to carry identification.

UNREGISTERED TAXIS POSE A SECURITY RISK

The updated official travel page detailed potential risks that British tourists may encounter in Turkey.

The ministry specifically emphasized that unlicensed taxis could pose a significant security risk.

The statement included warnings such as “Unregistered, meterless, or unlicensed vehicles can pose serious security threats.”

Officials advised tourists to call taxis through hotels or reliable mobile applications.

Additionally, it was recommended to note the license plate before getting in the vehicle, check if the meter is running, and to track the route throughout the journey.

AVOID PROTESTS WARNING

The British government indicated that protest demonstrations occasionally held in certain regions of Turkey could escalate into violent incidents over time.

While highlighting that social events are more prevalent in major cities such as Istanbul and Ankara, it was reminded that the police intervene with tear gas and water cannons during such events.

The ministry urged people to “Stay away from areas where demonstrations are taking place. Leave the area quickly during a possible protest.” It was also noted that protests could cause delays and cancellations in transportation services.

CRUCIAL WARNING AGAINST COUNTERFEIT ALCOHOL

Highlighting the increase in deaths due to counterfeit alcohol in recent years in Turkey, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office emphasized the need for tourists to be cautious in this regard.

The statement emphasized the necessity of obtaining alcohol only from licensed establishments, stating that products bought from street vendors or unknown sources pose serious health risks.

It was emphasized to check the authenticity of labels and caps on bottles, avoid homemade drinks, and the importance of consuming in hotels or reputable restaurant-bars.

CARRYING IDENTIFICATION IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT

Reminding that not carrying a photo ID in Turkey is against the law, the ministry called on tourists to carry their passports or residence permits with them.

Especially noting the increased security controls in crowded cities like Istanbul, it was stated that cooperation with police checks is necessary.
